Chinese Astrology
Do some people thoroughly annoy you? Have you been in relationships that would not work no matter how hard you tried? Do some people seem like aliens from another planet? Do you ever wonder why some children are so different from their parents and their siblings? Have you noticed that, in contrast to the seemingly difficult people in this world, there are others you enjoy being around, and it was easy from the moment you met? Has psychology failed to explain all the weirdness in your relationships?
If you answered “YES!” to any of these questions, I encourage you to learn about Chinese Astrology.
I was at an extended family holiday gathering back in 2004 when I picked up my first Chinese Astrology book (Suzanne White’s Chinese Astrology Plain and Simple). Curious, (and desperate for a consuming diversion), I began identifying the animals of various family members, and reading their descriptions.
To put it mildly, I just about fell off the divan.
Suddenly, my world made sense! And when my bejeweled mother (the combative Metal Dragon of 1940) came into the room and said, “You’re not going to wear that at my elegant dinner table are you?”, and my adorable son (the double Ox of 1997) responded in his most stubborn tone, “I’m not dressing up for dinner and you can’t make me”, I (the rustic Earth Pig of 1959, who’d always prefer to eat outside by campfire), realized that we weren’t BEING this way; we WERE this way, down to the tiniest fragments of marrow in our bones. All these wonderful people were just being the Dragons, Oxen, Dogs, Snakes, Tigers, Rats, Monkeys, Goats, Horses, and Roosters they were meant to be! And aren’t we very different on a fundamental level? Those behaviors that were heretofore extremely annoying became interesting! I could understand them, and stop relating to people like they were all Pigs (like me) gone haywire. I could also understand the weaknesses inherent in my animal, clearly see the positive and negative impact in my life, and develop strategies to utilize my strengths and overcome my weaknesses! It has all been very useful.
Since then, my interest in Chinese Astrology has grown. I’ve added a few more books to my collection, and I really enjoy helping people identify their animals, their sun sign, and those of their family members, friends, co-workers, significant others – past and present, etc. Then we integrate the information so it can be used to inform choices, and improve relationships.
